| Born in 1881 in Malaga Spain, Pablo Picasso was the son of a drawing and art teacher. He was an extraordinarily talented student, and passed the Barcelona School of Fine Arts entrance assessment when he was just 14 and that too in a single day. He was even exempted from the first two classes. As per one of the stories told about Pablo Picasso, his father realised his son’s astounding talent and presented his own palette and brushes to him, vowing never to paint in his life again.
Pablo Picasso went through various phases in his traits of painting methods. During the Blue Period which was from 1900 to 1904, he used various shades of blue to paint his characters, which gave the viewer a melancholic view of Picasso’s grimmer views of life. Later, during the Rose Period which was from 1905 to 1906, he chose tones of pink and most of his subjects were characters from the circus world.
He moved to Paris permanently in 1904 where he met Joan Miro, Henri Matisse and George Braques. Pablo Picasso was so inspired with Paul Cezanne’s work that he along with Juan Gris and George Braque worked on a cubist method in their work. In this style the characters are portrayed in geometrical shapes.
Pablo Picasso changed the women in his life as often as he changed his style of art. His art was probably influenced by his companions of that period in his life. He had health problems and had to undergo surgery in 1965. However, despite his failing health he did many paintings during his final years. He passed away at the age of 91 on 8th April 1973. |
